Antarctic tourism

Even in the XXI century it is not so easy to reach the Antarctica. Only a few points of entry to this ice continent exist today. Severe climate conditions and unapproachable coastline prevent intrusion to the last pristine wildland area. International laws strictly regulate any activities in the Antarctica.

We can offer a unique possibility to visit Antarctica by aircraft, for a period from one day and more. The trip, however, must be planned and reserved at least 6-8 months in advance.

Bellingshausen station. King George IslandBellingshausen Station (62° 12’ S. 58° 58’W) is a Russian (formerly Soviet) Antarctic station at Collins Harbour, on King George Island (Waterloo Island) in the South Shetland Islands. Its altitude is 16 m above sea level. The station was named aſter Russian sea captain Faddey Bellingshausen. It was one of the first research stations founded by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition in 1968. Year-round aerometeorological, oceanological, glaciological and geophysical observations, as well as biological and medical research, are undertaken at the station.

Atka bay. Princess Martha CoastAtka Bay (70°35'S. 7°51'W) is an iceport about 10 miles long and wide, marking a more or less permanent indentation in the front of the Ekstrom Ice Shelf on the coast of Queen Maud Land in Eastern Antarctica on the Princess Martha Coast. It was named by personnel of the U.S. ship Atka, which moored here in February 1955 while investigating possible base sites for International Geophysical Year operations. It is interesting that during WWII the ship served in the Soviet merchant navy under the name Admiral Makarov.

Ulvetanna peak. Drygalski MountainsUlvetanna Peak (from Norwegian "uvletanna" - wolf’s tooth) is a sharp peak 2,930 m high on the eastern part of Fenriskjeſten Mountain, as part of Drygalski Mountains in Queen Maud Land. Queen Maud Land (Norwegian: Dronning Maud Land), named aſter a queen of Norway (full name: Maud Charlotte Mary Victoria) is a vast territory c. 2.7 million km2, comprising one-sixth of the total area of Antarctica and lying between 20° west and 45° east. The area is subject to the Antarctic Treaty System. There is no permanent population, although there are several active research stations including the Norwegian Troll and Russian Novolazarevskaya stations, the closest to Drygalski Mountains.

Schirmacher Oasis. Queen Maud LandAntarctica is oſten named the “ice desert”. However, this icy continent also contains ice-free areas called the “Oases”. They occur at the edge of ice sheet zones, sometimes occupying quite extensive territories with a large number of lakes. The first Antarctic oasis (Dry Valley) was discovered by the Robert Scott expedition in 1901-1904 in the vicinity of McMurdo Strait.

Ice barrier. Lazarev Ice ShelfThe Antarctic ice cover comprises the inland ice sheet and the ice shelf - a thick floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. The thickness of the ice sheet varies from 2000 to 4000 m. The thickness of the ice shelves ranges from about 100 to 1,000 m. The Antarctic ice shelves extend along the periphery of the ice sheet, covering primarily the bays at the shallow continental shelf. Their edge can be a vertical ice wall up to 100 m above the sea surface.

Untersee lake. Wohlthat mountainsThe Wohlthat Mountains are a large group of mountains located immediately east of the Orvin Mountains in Fimbulheimen in central Queen Maud Land in Antarctica. They were discovered by the Third German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939), initiated by Hermann Goering and led by Capt. Alfred Ritscher, who surveyed an area between latitudes 69°10’ S and 76°30’ S and longitudes 11°30 W and 20°00’ E, totaling 600,000 km2, and called it Neuschwabenland, or New Swabia.

The South PoleThe South Pole, also known as the Geographic South Pole, is one of the two points where the earth's axis of rotation intersects its surface. It is the southernmost point on the surface of the earth and lies on the opposite side of the earth from the North Pole. Situated on the continent of Antarctica, on an icy plateau at an altitude of 2,835 m, the Geographic South Pole should not be confused with the South Magnetic Pole. At the South Pole all directions face north.

The pole of inaccessibilityA Pole of Inaccessibility marks a location that is extremely challenging to reach due to its remoteness from geographical features that could provide access; it is also the name of a Soviet Antarctic station located 2,100 km from the Mirny station (Russian) and 463 km from the South Pole.

Molodezhnaya station. Thala hills oasisThe Thala Hills are low, rounded coastal hills between Freeth and Spooner Bays in Enderby Land.Enderby Land was discovered in February 1831 by John Biscoe in the whaling brig Tula, and named aſter the Enderby Brothers of London, owners of the Tula, who encouraged their captains to combine exploration with sealing. It was one of the first expeditions following the discovery of Antarctica by James Cook and Faddey Bellingshausen.

Progress Station. Prydz BayPrydz Bay in the Sea of Sodruzhestva is a deep embayment of Antarctica between the Lars Christensen Coast and the Ingrid Christensen Coast. Portions of the bay were sighted in January and February 1931 by Norwegian whalers and the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE). It was explored in February 1935 by Norwegian whaler Captain Klarius Mikkelsen, and was mapped in considerable detail from aerial photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition of 1936-37. The bay was named in honor of Olaf Prydz, general manager of the expedition.

Vostok lake. Vostok stationVostok Station is a Russian Antarctic research station. It was named aſter Vostok, the lead ship of the First Russian Antarctic Expedition, captained by Faddey Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev in 1819-1821. Vostok research station is located near the southern pole of inaccessibility and the South Geomagnetic Pole, making it one of the optimal places to observe changes in the earth's magnetosphere.
